Canon 60D Tips: Saving favorite settings using C mode

Whether you like to shoot portraits around the house or wild animals in the great outdoors, you can save your favorite settings for quick and easy access.

This is extremely helpful in spur of the moment shooting situations…like a baby taking their first steps, a bird landing within a few feet of you, or capturing a magnificent sunset.

  1. To register custom settings, first select your shooting mode (Tv, Av, P, etc…).
  2. Adjust your custom settings, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, AF mode, AF point, metering mode, drive mode, exposure compensation and flash compensation.
  3. Once your settings are in place, access the menu and select ‘Camera user settings‘ under the third wrench tab.
  4. Select ‘Register settings‘, then press the SET button.
  5. A confirmation dialog will appear asking you to save the current settings to “C” mode.
  6. Select OK and your settings will be registered to C-mode.

A Ring Around the Moon

The ring around the Moon is caused by the refraction of Moonlight (which of course is reflected sunlight) from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. The shape of the ice crystals results in a focusing of the light into a ring. Since the ice crystals typically have the same shape, namely a hexagonal shape, the Moon ring is almost always the same size.

Less typical are the halos that may be produced by different angles in the crystals. They can create halos with an angle of 46 degrees.

Folklore has it that a ring around the moon signifies bad weather is coming, and in many cases this may be true. So how can rings around the moon be a predictor of weather to come? The ice crystals that cover the halo signify high altitude, thin cirrus clouds that normally precede a warm front by one or two days. Typically, a warm front will be associated with a low pressure system which is commonly referred to as a storm. (Cooley, 2001)

Full moon is a lunar phase that occurs when the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun. More precisely, a full moon occurs when the geocentric apparent (ecliptic) longitudes of the Sun and Moon differ by 180 degrees; the Moon is then in opposition with the Sun.[1] As seen from Earth, the hemisphere of the Moon that is facing the earth (the near side) is almost fully illuminated by the Sun and appears round. Only during a full moon is the opposite hemisphere of the Moon, which is not visible from Earth (the far side), completely unilluminated.

The time interval between similar lunar phases—the synodic month—is on average about 29.53 days. Therefore, in those lunar calendars in which each month begins on the new moon, the full moon falls on either the 14th or 15th of the lunar month. Because lunar months have a whole number of days, lunar months may be either 29 or 30 days long. (Wikipedia.org, 2010)
